Hipsy Gap and the art of balance

Sitting down with Hipsy Gap was such a treat, they know their stuff and they have opinions on the music world. Like most small artists they're all spread thin, acting as manager, social media, producer, and merch designers as well as day jobs. That doesn't stop them from putting out a consistent stream of music.

They partially credit this to their carefully honed ability to spread out responsibility, but what seems more relevant is that they're responding to the state of the world. Like a lot of artists they feel a need to create to deal with the state of the world. In a way they're providing levity to the listener. They're music is fun, it's danceable, and most importantly its cathartic to sing along to.

With that need to create comes a very necessary lesson: learning to say no. The bands frontwoman Makenzie handles all the bookings and found it was hard for her to say no to gigs in the beginning. This doesn't mean that you'll have a hard time seeing them live, if you keep an eye on their social media you can find them playing across Brooklyn.

If you're no where near New York, like me, then you're in for a little wait. Don't worry though, it'll be worth while. The band are working on an EP, and this time it's something more collaborative. Up until now guitarist Daniel and frontwoman Makenzie have been mavericks when it comes to songwriting. This EP hopes to be more authentic to the whole band taking a collective approach.
In the meantime they've got plenty of alternative goodness to listen to on their Spotify.
