Get to know one of the freshest voices in alt rock

Releasing her debut single in 2020 Lia Rye came out swinging. With stunning vocals and an alternative sound that set her up to grow into something amazing. The beginning of her career set up a strong base for Lia to begin her journey to stardom.

At the beginning of 2024, Lia released Bad Dream. Through TikTok the song is reaching a much bigger audience. It has potential to be the next big sound on the app. Despite this new found connection with TikTok the musician was late to the party, steering clear of the app until just a few years ago. She told me she hated it in the beginning, it was panned by her peers and lecturers, and she could see the obvious flaws in the app.

Despite this it's an invaluable resource for artists, and she found a community there who loved her music.

A bigger change in her career journey is the introduction of a band. She credits the band with her ability to throw herself into alt rock. There's a feeling of her more recent sound throughout but it really feels like it's come into its own. She's now comparable to alt icons such as YONAKA and PVRIS. She described her recent song as something she “truly wanted to release.”

With the whole band still being students, live music is difficult to arrange. Lia prefers to play with her band since they play together naturally, but as is often the case has to occasionally play with other musicians. Her songs are strong enough to be played by anyone and still be hers which is deeply impressive for an artist so early in their career.

She described performing live as her first love so I’d advise keeping an eye out for live shows in the future.
