Nobody at Vogue has seen Hairspray

Vogue has just released a Hairspray themed shoot, and it's hard to imagine they have ever seen either version of the movie. The shoot was themed around the 2007 musical remake, including the candy coloured outfits and dance shots. Unfortunately it missed the entire point of the movie.

The message of Hairspray isn't subtle, it's simply the plot. Nothing is subliminal. Nothing is hard to understand. It's about breaking down racial segregation and fat acceptance.

This is why Vogue decided to centre the shoot around Gigi Hadid.

Apparently playing the character of Amber, the shoot takes an unintelligible angle leaving everyone confused at best, outraged at worst. Unsurprisingly they didn't cast any plus sized models as background either.

Of course Vogue isn't capable of making a statement. They're stuck in a rut. With Anna Wintour at the helm Vogue has continued to run itself into the ground, losing creativity year after year. But creativity wasn't necessary for this shoot, the story has been told over and over. The original movie is a John Waters, it's rich with inspiration. The remake of the movie is stylistically fun and easy to elevate. The stage show is long running and provides enough variation to be inspired in a broad manner.

After years of Vogue being a let down I'm left wondering why we even support them. They are stale, they aren't supporting change in the industry, and they can't achieve a simple shoot without large scale disappointment.
