Men in Hollywood stealing art and making it worse

In the summer of 2019 Euphoria took the world by storm for its fantastic costumes, make-up, and Zendaya's award winning performance. Despite its overall success complaints have been made against the persistent use of nudity despite the characters being teens, and the clunky writing of Sam Levison. This is not the first time Levison has been accused of producing work that values style (and over sexualisation of women) over solid writing, most notably with his work on The Idol.

What both these works have in common is that they weren't Levisons to begin with. For Euphoria the most notable ripping off wasnt that the show was based on an older show. But the stylings, which the show is most famous for, were allegedly created by artist Petra Collins, who was given no credit for her initial directorial work or artistic vision.

The Idol was 80% complete when Levison took over, replacing Amy Seimetz as director and replacing all her work along with that.

It's not uncommon for men to take a woman's story and rebuild it from a perspective that is dehumanising to the women the story centres around. In some cases, like The Idol, it's favourable since Amy Seimetz has been theorised to have left after being pressured too by her male colleagues. With her co-creator Abel Tesfaye saying the show was veering too much into a "female perspective” with her at the helm.

Even with some of this being speculative we know that women are removed from the powerful positions in film and TV all the time and Sam Levison seems to benefit from this system quite a bit.
